Protecting our planet is a responsibility we all share, individuals and companies alike. That is why, in accordance with our sustainability strategy BEYOND, we chose to publish our sustainability report – digitally.
Many companies are required by law to publish a sustainability report. As we fall under the reporting obligations of thyssenkrupp AG, we are not one of them – and yet, in this spring of 2023, we published our first sustainability report. We believe that sustainability is so important, it’s worth going beyond what is required by law. That attitude is what gave name to our sustainability strategy: BEYOND. In this vein, when considering the meaning of “sustainability”, we also prefer to not stop at just “green” and instead go, you guessed it, beyond. That is why, in our sustainability report as well as in our everyday activities, we don’t stop at evaluating just the impact on the planet, but also social and economic issues. To make this even more clear, we’ve divided our activities into the categories CLEAN, GREEN and GOOD – and we aim to go beyond what’s required of us in each of them.
So, when reading our report, you will find more than just our engagement around the reduction of carbon emissions.
Describing the content of our report isn’t quite as easy as you would think – and that is by design. Because we are always adding projects, developing new goals, and meeting milestones, our sustainability report must be as dynamic as our activities. That is why we chose to publish it digitally. When scrolling through, you will find regularly updated figures. It is important to us to make transparent where we currently stand, as sustainability is not something you do once. Like the horizon, it retreats as you approach it, because there are always ways of becoming even more environmentally and socially conscious. As a large company, we accept the responsibility of continually striving to do even better.
However, we can still be proud of our achievements so far, such as the fact that with a 32% reduction of CO2e emissions over the past four years, we are right on track to meet one of our most ambitious goals: Climate neutrality by 2030.
With 15.900 people working for Materials Services and a willingness to improve deeply embedded into our culture, good ideas are abundant. So, when our employees hear of new ways to do right by the environment or other people, the question is never “if?”, but only ever “when?”. We are very proud of their manifold engagements, which include local initiatives all across the globe as well as our Materials Services-wide sustainability community, the TEAM BEYOND. To show our employees how much we honor their activities, we’ve implemented a Sustainability Award, which we awarded for the first time this year.
While the sustainability report is a method of holding ourselves accountable – it contains our goals as well as how far we’ve come in meeting them – we also believe that given our size, it is our responsibility to set standards and even act as a role model. Our CEO Martin Stillger explains:
We hope and believe that seeing us go further will inspire our partners, customers and even industry competitors to also do more. Using the hashtag #MXgoesBEYOND, we’re also taking you along for the journey on our LinkedIn profile. Because one thing is clear: True sustainability can never be achieved alone – so let us all work together.
